History

Social issues are becoming increasingly complex, making it difficult to address them with only specialized knowledge in a specific field.
In order to harmoniously implement science and technology in human society and enhance the creation of new value in society, it is necessary to grasp things from a bird's-eye view and gather diverse, cross-disciplinary "knowledge" - "comprehensive knowledge" (*1).
In order to harmoniously implement science and technology in human society and enhance the creation of new value in society, it is necessary to grasp things from a bird's-eye view and gather diverse, cross-disciplinary "knowledge" - "comprehensive knowledge" (*1). In light of the need to create "comprehensive knowledge" that combines the knowledge of Humanities and Social Sciences with the knowledge of natural sciences to solve problems that cannot be solved by a single specialized knowledge, in April 2026 we merged the Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture and the Graduate School of Science and Technology to open a master's program in the "Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences," with two majors: Humanities and Social Sciences and Sciences and Technologies.

*1 Comprehensive knowledge: Defined by the Cabinet Office as "the gathering of diverse knowledge to generate the vitality of knowledge that creates new value." In other words, by fusing various types of knowledge beyond the boundaries of individual organizations and fields of expertise, we can find ways to create innovation and implement it in society, leading to the resolution of social issues.
